Next-Gen AI Mental Health Chatbot Development
We developed an AI-powered mental health chatbot for a client aiming to provide human-like therapeutic support. Validated by licensed psychologists, the solution integrates advanced AI technologies to deliver safe, ethical, and empathetic mental health consulting.

AI technologies are advancing fast, and their application expands to various traditionally human areas of expertise and service delivery. Our team has recently worked on a next-gen AI-powered mental health chatbot meant to provide users with a human-like level of therapeutic assistance and mental health consulting.
Client’s Profile
The client is a serial entrepreneur with an innovative business idea of creating an advanced AI chatbot to address the mental health needs of users.
Client’s Requirements/Goals
The client approached RNDpoint with a request to build a mental health consulting app from scratch. The end-to-end service pipeline presupposed all stages of app production, from concept development to the mobile app’s technical production. The main aspects of the client’s business idea included:
- Universally skilled psychology consulting chatbot. The chatbot had to possess a broad set of psychological consulting and diagnostics skills to be able to cater to broad audiences with a variety of mental health issues (it does not solve deep problems but recommends contacting a psychologist).
- Human-like empathy. The chatbot was expected to express human-like empathy, professional ethics, and effectiveness in patient consulting without potentially harmful or misleading advice.
Business Challenge
The initial challenge faced by the client was the slow work and poor communication level of the previously hired development team, which created the risk of deadline violation. The RNDpoint team initially assumed a part of the back-end development tasks to implement the project on time and comply with the client’s schedule. On the business concept side, we faced the challenge of creating a psychologist AI bot with a level of consulting expertise similar to that of humans (for mild to moderate mental health cases).
Implementation
The app’s implementation process involved the following stages and work aspects.
Model’s Testing with Psychologists
We engaged a team of licensed psychologists to validate all scenarios of the bot’s responses to clients. This measure was vital for ensuring the bot doesn’t misdiagnose users or give potentially harmful responses or advice. All responses were refined based on psychologist feedback to align with the highest professional practice standards.
Complex Agent Architecture Design
The team developed a segmented architecture that breaks down the user’s conversation with the chatbot into multiple components for more human-like processing and mimicking a real-life therapy session. The chatbot can engage the user in a reflective conversation that encourages a meaningful discussion of their mental health issue. Based on the collected data, the chatbot can give tailored guidance and coping strategies similar to those a human therapist would suggest. The chatbot also monitors the severity of the reported mental health problem, recommending professional human help upon the identification of a grave problem.
Data Preparation
We used the Whisper model to transcribe 90 hours of video recordings of human therapy sessions and train the algorithm on that data. The team also compiled a comprehensive dataset with professional interpretations and reflections on the therapeutic interactions. The model’s OpenAI GPT-3.5, Llama2, Mistral, and Llama3 LLMs were subsequently modified based on the psychologist’s feedback. The models were further adjusted to produce professionally acceptable, safe, and contextually relevant responses.
Tech Stack
The team employed a variety of advanced models to ensure a high level of accuracy in user prompt interpretation and human-like response generation. We used Langchain and CrewAi/LangGraph to build dynamic conversational flows and manage dialogue states effectively. Accurate and relevant responses were ensured by using the Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) technology, enabling the chatbot to retrieve only relevant information from user inquiries.
Pinecone was used for vector similarity search to improve the relevance of responses. We employed transformers for efficient model deployment and inference and Streamlit for intuitive UI design. The Whisper model was used for high-quality speech recognition and audio data processing.
Ethical Standard Implementation
It was vital to guarantee that the app has ethical safeguards put in place so that it doesn’t provide users with wrong diagnoses or potentially harmful therapeutic advice. The app’s design was made with empathetic and safe mental health consulting in mind, with the prompts for seeking professional human help given at the identification of grave mental problems.
Solution Delivered
The project is approaching the mobile app production stage. At present, the team has managed to incorporate the following solutions into the chatbot:
- A conversational chatbot that delivers effects and empathetic mental health consulting and support.
- The bot is capable of supporting a consistent human-like conversation with the user that resembles a meeting with a human psychologist to a large degree.
- The solution comes with a multi-component conversation strategy capable of reflecting on the user’s input, giving valuable advice, and monitoring the progress, all targeted at the delivery of high-value therapeutic interactions.
- The chatbot’s entire spectrum of responses and therapeutic advice has been reviewed and validated by licensed psychologists to avoid potential human harm and enhance the app’s safety and credibility.
Project Outcomes
The project was initiated in May 2024 and is still in progress. At present, there are four team members on board, including one AI architect, one junior AI developer, one senior back-end/database developer, and one front-end developer.
The technology stack employed to build the app’s AI functionality includes OpenAI models, OpenAI Embeddings, Langchain, CrewAI/LangGraph, RAG, Pinecone, Llama2/Llama3 models, AWS, and Whisper.
The app hasn’t been deployed yet, so it’s too early to report its outcomes. The mobile app is currently approaching the production stage. Yet, the scope of the team’s work on the project includes project discovery, design, front-end, and back-end assistance with the app’s design, and the overall AI architecture for the app’s fulfillment of its purposes.
